Living and working in Jerusalem, I am a painter and independent scholar specializing in medieval Kabbalah and philosophy. Art is not only a way of life for me but also a laboratory in which I intensify and articulate the mysteries of life as I perceive them.
Based on ancient iconography, the "Ilaney Sefirot" (sefirotic trees), these series of diagrams are maps of the divine, depicting its different emanations and powers, often taking the form of a human body. The topic of the chain of emanation and divine efflux is at the center, focusing on the relation and integration of opposites—Hesed and Gevurah, feminine and masculine. Mapping the divine presents a very audacious form of representation, both extremely figurative and abstract. This series of works is based on and inspired by artifacts belonging to the Gross Family Collection.
Based on ancient iconography, here at display talismanic compositions of angels and entities. Each entity represents a power, an oath to act and protect. Seeing the sacred take form in an iconographic language has opened new dialogues for me.
Miror Images or painted facsimiles, back to the kabbalistic language, this series replace the Hamsa in the body, five against five are its extremities. In the palm of the hand, all knowledge is encompassed; palmistry, time setting, ten sefirot, shiviti, psalm for protection and more.
The Merkavah is the vehicle of transportation for any galactic traveler. "I went down to the nut grove" describes the descent into a mystical journey. In later mystical traditions, the image of the nut and its membranes is described as layers of light and colors of the divine palaces. A chariot of two horses and the rider in the middle—from the nut to the brain to the lungs—these inner parts of the body that balance and activate life serve as metaphors for the inner journey in this visual interpretation.
